Birkenstock
OUR BRAND PURPOSE.
The human foot is a masterpiece of nature, a biomechanical marvel. Our feet each have 28 bones - a quarter of all the bones in the human body - and are interwoven with 19 muscles and 107 tendons and ligaments. This amazingly powerful and beautiful structure is the solid foundation for our body system.
From the moment we learn to walk, we can explore the world - and along the way help those who need our support. Thanks to our feet, we can climb the highest mountains, cross deserts, dance, jump and play. Our feet enable us to challenge our limits and carry us through our lives.
About six million years ago, our ancestors began walking upright. Barefoot, of course, well into modern times. The origins of shoe making go back thousands of years and are rooted in the human need to protect our feet. As civilization evolved, our environment changed, and so did the design of shoes. In the industrial era, shoes evolved into a fashion item, but at the expense of foot health. Since that time, shoes have largely ignored the natural needs of our feet.
A FOOTBED FOR EVERYONE.
Since 1774, we have had one vision: we want everyone to have access to our footbed. Because we believe that when your feet feel good, you feel good. And we believe there are two factors that make an item a favorite: it feels great and it is made to the highest quality standards. It's that simple.

Go for the Best Fit
At Birkenstock, they understand how crucial the perfect fit is for a healthy stride. Ill-fitting shoes can lead to lasting foot issues, and of course, you want to avoid that. Not sure which size or width to choose? We're here to assist you in finding the fit for your next pair of Birkenstocks.
Which Size Should I Choose?
Determining which size Birkenstock you need is straightforward and something you can do yourself. All you need is a tape measure and the Birkenstock size chart. Here's how:
- Place your feet flat on the floor, possibly against a wall.
- Measure the length of your foot from the heel to the big toe (or longest toe).
- If you fall between two numbers, choose the larger one, as feet tend to expand slightly after exertion.
- Stand on the tape measure.
- Measure the width of your foot at the widest point from the inside to the outside.
- Compare your result with the size chart.
Regular or Narrow Fit?
No two people have the same foot. That's why the Birkenstock footbed is available in two widths. The regular-fit is for normal to wide feet, and the narrow-fit is designed for narrow feet. By choosing the right width, you'll experience optimal comfort. The correct fit keeps your foot in place and prevents pinched, painful feet or more severe foot issues. You can identify the width of a Birkenstock by the foot symbol on the footbed. The regular footbed is recognizable by the uncolored foot symbol, and the narrow footbed is identifiable by the colored foot symbol.
Take Them Out of the Box
Congratulations, your Birkenstocks have arrived! Quickly take your new favorites out of the shoebox and first undo all the straps.
Put Your Feet In
Place your feet in the footbed but don't fasten the straps yet. You'll recognize the right fit if there's a few millimeters of space around the heel and toes. Additionally, your feet should comfortably fit the footbed shape without resting on the edge.
Next, fasten the straps. They should snugly fit the foot but not be too tight or constrict the feet. For sandals with a heel strap, ensure the heel strap isn't too tight, or the foot may be pushed too far forward.
Check if the fit is good and if the straps are properly adjusted by taking a few steps. If the straps pinch the foot or are too loose, adjust them. If your feet can move freely while walking and don't hit the edge of the footbed, they're a perfect fit.
The last step on this page is the first steps with your new Birkenstocks. It's also a very important step because, like all shoes, Birkenstocks need to be properly broken in. We recommend not wearing your new shoes, sandals, or clogs for more than a few hours straight at first. This allows your feet to get used to the footbed. Wear them gradually longer until your new Birkenstocks feel wonderfully comfortable, and you won't want to take them off.
